Abstract: In this ninety-minute training, Dr. Emily Sandoz presents an integrated introduction to Relational Frame Theory (RFT). You will be introduced to RFT by way of behavior analysis as an organizing system for work in the behavioral sciences. Dr. Sandoz illustrates the utility of a behavior analytic framework by way of her own development as a clinician and researcher. Dr. Sandoz describes the development of verbal behavior and its impact on both human strength and struggle. A review of early work on the properties of stimulus equivalence, by Sidman and others, is unfolded into an explanation of the properties of verbal symbolic behavior. You will learn how Relational Frame Theory (RFT) allows for a parsimonious extension of behavior analysis to the conceptualization and treatment of ‘psychopathology’. In this training, you will learn how the properties of verbal behavior account for behaviors that appear to have been acquired with little direct learning history, why some behaviors are resistant to change, and why learning may generalize across stimuli and contexts that appear unrelated. You will learn describes how the properties of verbal behavior tend to lead humans to fear and avoid in ways that constrict our lives and how the properties of verbal behavior form the basis for the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). In this training, you will learn about major patterns of relational responding that have been consistently demonstrated in the literature (e.g., coordination, comparison, distinction, and deictics) and how these forms of relating explain how ‘talk therapy’ can create change in lives outside the therapy hour.
